During a recent service call, I was booked to replace a faulty ozone unit. After inspecting it, I noticed that the UV tube was leaking, so I began the process of removing the old unit. As I pulled out the glass tube, I discovered the back end was shattered and broken off—no wonder this was causing issues!
Fortunately, no glass chips made their way into the spa. My suspicion is that this failure might have been caused by handling the tube without gloves, as oils from the skin can create weak points. When the tube heats up, this uneven expansion can lead to cracking.
With a new UV tube in place, the spa was back to full functionality, and the customer was happy to have their spa up and running again.
